In 1 Corinthians, Paul had written to the believers in the church to help them to correct their internal problems. Some false teachers responded negatively by questioning his authority and motive. In this letter, Paul defends his apostleship and answers his critics. Above all, he expresses his joy because of the repentance of many believers in response to his earlier letter. He also encourages them to finish what they had started in preparing an offering for the poverty-stricken Christians in Jerusalem. He will visit them in God's time. Meanwhile, he is sending Titus and another brother back to them (8:16-18), for the purpose of getting the offering the Corinthians had promised.
