John Winthrop (1588-1649)by Dr. Joseph Schafer (Penn State UBF)Matthew 5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden." --------------------------------- The name of Winthrop's wife? The following is Dr. Schafer's e-mail exchange with Mary Donato concerning the name of Winthrop's wife.--------------------------------- From: Joseph L Schafer [jls@stat.psu.edu] Sent: Wednesday, January 13, 1999 8:45 AM To: MrdFargo@aol.com Cc: dylee@ship.edu Subject: Re: John Winthrop Dear Ms. Donato, Thanks very much for this helpful information. This mistake seems to have begun as a typographical error and has propagated throughout the literature. We'll try to correct it. Best wishes. Joe Schafer --------------------------------- From MrdFargo@aol.com Tue Jan 12 23:36:27 1999 To: JLS@STAT.PSU.EDU Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: John Winthrop Dear Dr, Schafer: I am a direct descendant of John Winthrop,Senior and I respectfully wish to correct you in regards to the name you have for John's first wife. In your Symposium on Spiritual Leaders (on the net), the name you have given is Mary Worth. Her correct name is Mary Forth, daughter of John Forth, esq. of Essex, England. If you will check The Genealogical Register of the First Settlers of New England by John Farmer (Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc., Baltimore, 1976 - revised from the original publication of this book, published in Lancaster, Massachusetts in 1829) you will see that John's first wife was Mary Forth. My sister, who is an LDS genealogist, has thoroughly researched our John Winthrop ancestral line, and all of the centuries old records she has researched state that John's first wife was Mary Forth. I am in hopes that you will do your own, more thorough research on this matter and make the correction of Mary's maiden surname in whatever writings you have on the net. Millions of people do their genealogical research on the net and it is only fair that they receive the correct information. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Sincerely, Mary Donato Contact us via e-mail if you are interested in Bible study or if you have any comments about our website. © 2007 UBF of Shippensburg |
